TextLess is an app created by Adam Katz and Tristan Ingalz for Android smartphones which aims to reduce texting and driving. The goal is to make it available for iPhone users later this year.

Adam’s story:

Inspired by my community’s efforts to educate people on the dangers of texting and driving, I researched ways to combat the addiction to instant phone communication. I learned that while several texting and driving apps exist, they aren't widely used. After trying these apps myself and talking to friends, I concluded that the available apps were either too restrictive (i.e. phones freeze while in motion) or offered only on limited carriers.

This past summer I collaborated with Tristan Ingalz, a  programmer with a similar vision, to develop a multi-device and carrier app (TextLess) that attempts to address these issues. When TextLess is activated and the driver exceeds 15mph, an automated response informs the text sender that the recipient is driving and will respond when it is safe.

If you are a passenger, you simply change the setting to passenger mode, and no response is sent.

TextLess doesn’t eliminate texting and driving but it does serve as a deterrent. In the driver mode the phone is still active and can receive or send texts, but by sending an automated message, it takes the urgency away from responding because the sender knows you are not available. The automated response is fully customizable.

The link above takes you to the Google App store. TextLess is priced at 99 cents and the first $1,000 of sales and 25% of sales thereafter will be donated to Evan’s Team, a foundation set up in memory of Evan Lieberman who lost his life to a distracted driver, and which is committed to helping local hospitals, educating the public about the dangers of distracted driving and working with various government agencies to help reduce it. For more on Evan’s Team see attached link:  Evan's Team

If you drive and have an Android phone please try it out and spread the word. Together we may be able to reduce texting and driving accidents and support a very important foundation.

Thanks.
